Before Justin Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, several other teams, including the Chargers, Ravens, and Raiders, were involved in trade discussions with the Chicago Bears. Fields revealed on teammate Cam Heyward’s podcast, saying he wanted to land somewhere he could compete for a starting quarterback position.

“I’m not sure of all the teams, but there were a lot of teams that already had solidified quarterbacks, and I didn’t want to do that. Chargers were one, Ravens were another,” Fields explained. “Raiders, they talked a little bit. I don’t know too much. But many teams had quarterbacks who just got new contracts, so I didn’t want to be there.”

In the end, Fields was traded to Pittsburgh, where he started after an injury sidelined Russell Wilson. Fields has started all three games this season and is proving to be a solid fit for the Steelers’ offense.

Fields Settling in With Steelers After Trade

Despite being traded, Fields harbors no ill will toward the Chicago Bears, who opted to trade him and draft Caleb Williams first overall. Fields mentioned meeting Williams when the latter was still in high school, and he had high praise for him.

“He was night and day better than everybody else,” Fields said. “Him and JJ McCarthy were the best two, in my opinion.”

Fields’ strong start with Pittsburgh has led to some second-guessing in Chicago, as fans and analysts are beginning to wonder if the Bears made the right move in trading him for a rookie prospect. Fields, however, seems content with his new role and the opportunity he’s been given in Pittsburgh.
