Thirty Years On: “Priscilla the Party!” Brings Immersive Theatre Experience to London

Thirty years after the cult comedy film “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” danced its way into the hearts of audiences worldwide, London’s Soho district is set to host an immersive theatre experience that promises to recapture the film’s vivid spirit. “Priscilla the Party!” invites London audiences to immerse themselves in the vibrant world of three extravagantly dressed drag artists, echoing the unexpected cinema hit from 1994. This latest iteration builds upon a legacy that began with the film, written and directed by Stephan Elliott, and continued with a musical version that expanded the story’s global following a decade later.

Director Simon Phillips, who directed the original Priscilla musical, is excited about the production’s evolution. He notes, “Keeping audiences in their seats always felt tough. They always wanted to stand up and dance anyway.” This observation highlights the production’s enduring appeal and natural progression towards an immersive format that encourages audience participation.

Phillips also reflects on the broader societal changes over the decades, observing that the film’s message of acceptance and finding family resonates as powerfully today as it did at its debut. “I think the fact that that particular group of people were being seen as the heroes and heroines on stage was not very common at the time it was made,” he said. The director emphasizes that while “it’s a much easier sell now,” the core message remains unchanged, celebrating acceptance and the diverse family forms.

From March 25, attendees will be treated to renditions of classic hits like “I Will Survive,” “It’s Raining Men,” and Kylie Minogue anthems, with bookings open until the end of September. Actor Reece Kerridge, who steps into the shoes of Adam/Felicia, highlights the demanding nature of the performances, from singing and dancing to navigating the stage in heels and corsets. He conveys the show’s vibrant energy and message of love and acceptance.

As “Priscilla the Party!” prepares to immerse London in its colorful, dynamic world, it is a testament to its source material’s enduring appeal and message. The production not only celebrates the progress made in representing and accepting LGBTQ+ stories and characters but also reaffirms the universal themes of love, family, and resilience that resonate across generations.

“Priscilla the Party!” not only revisits the charm and message of its filmic predecessor but also enhances it through the immediacy and inclusivity of immersive theatre. As audiences step into the vibrant world of Priscilla, they’re invited not just to watch but to become part of the celebration of diversity, acceptance, and the boundless forms of love and family. This unique experience in London’s Soho district marks a significant moment in the ongoing journey of “Priscilla,” from screen to stage, continually evolving while staying true to its heart.
