Paws and Relax at Istanbul Airport

In a heartwarming attempt to make air travel more enjoyable, Istanbul Airport has introduced a delightful twist for weary and anxious travelers: a team of therapy dogs. Roaming the bustling corridors of one of the world’s busiest airports, these furry friends offer a unique form of comfort with their wagging tails and warm nuzzles. This innovative initiative aims to alleviate stress and bring smiles to the faces of passengers navigating through the complexities of air travel.

    Meet the Canine Comfort Crew

Dubbed the “Therapy Dog Team,” these five four-legged companions have been specially trained to handle the dynamic environment of a busy airport. From the gentle Italian retriever Kuki, the team captain, to the attentive Border Collie Alita, each dog brings its unique charm to the fore. Certified as therapy dogs, they have undergone rigorous preparation to remain calm and focused amidst the hustle and bustle. “We must ensure that they are safe and 100% adapted to all environments,” explains Kadir Demirtas, Istanbul Airport’s customer experience manager. This meticulous training ensures that each encounter with a traveler is both soothing and safe.

    A Tail-Wagging Schedule

Operating during peak travel hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., these canine colleagues are not just wandering pets but hardworking airport staff members, complete with official badges and uniforms. Led by handlers responsible for their care, the dogs have a structured routine that matches their energy levels and temperaments. “They walk around the airport led by their handlers who are also responsible for their care,” states Volkan Arslan, the team’s veterinarian. This thoughtful approach allows each dog to perform at their best, providing comfort without becoming overwhelmed.

    Expanding Paw Prints

The program’s initial success has prompted airport officials to consider expanding the project. The presence of these therapy dogs has not only made headlines but has significantly impacted the ambiance of the airport. Travelers have expressed profound appreciation for the moments of joy and calm these furry ambassadors provide. “We are always surrounded by people constantly petting her,” shares Volkan Gul, Alita’s dedicated handler, highlighting these dogs’ positive effect on passengers.

    A Furry Future for Travel

As Istanbul Airport looks to the future, the therapy dogs stand as a testament to the airport’s commitment to customer satisfaction and innovative stress-reduction strategies. This pilot project may serve as a model for other airports worldwide as they seek to enhance the travel experience. For now, passengers at Istanbul Airport can look forward to extra comfort and companionship, making their journey more bearable and enjoyable.
