Expedition and Navigator models face potential fluid leaks and reduced braking

Ford is recalling nearly 274,000 of its 2022–2024 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs in the U.S. due to a defect that could result in brake failure, raising the risk of crashes. The issue stems from the front brake lines potentially coming into contact with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The affected vehicles include 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators. The defect may cause brake fluid to leak and diminish braking function. While Ford estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles actually have the problem, the consequences could be severe. The company has received 45 warranty reports involving front brake line leaks but no reports of crashes or injuries.

    Inspection and repairs underway

Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake lines of the impacted vehicles and replace the lines or the air cleaner outlet pipe if needed. All repairs will be done free of charge. Dealer notifications began on June 19, and owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed between May 26 and May 30.

Owners can check if their SUV is included in the recall by using the NHTSA website or Ford’s official recall lookup tool. The recall number is 25S47.

    Warning signs and safety advice

Drivers of affected vehicles may notice increased pedal travel — meaning they have to press the brake pedal harder than usual — as well as a possible red brake warning light on the dashboard. Both signs may indicate fluid loss and a decline in braking capability. If either symptom occurs, drivers are urged to contact their dealer immediately.

The recall highlights continued scrutiny over brake system safety and follows a separate recall earlier this month involving Honda vehicles with a similar brake-related risk. Brake line defects, while statistically rare, can compromise driver control, especially in emergency situations.
