Microsoft has introduced a new optional feature for Windows 11 aimed at improving File Explorer performance by preloading the application in the background. The enhancement is designed to deliver faster launch times without altering the user experience. Alongside this change, Microsoft is rolling out additional updates to the File Explorer context menu to streamline navigation and reduce visual clutter.
Background Preloading for Faster Performance
The new feature allows File Explorer to load silently in the background after being toggled on. Users will not see any direct interface changes but should experience noticeably quicker access to files and folders. For those who prefer not to preload applications, Microsoft has made the feature fully optional. It can be turned off by unchecking Enable window preloading for faster launch times in the Folder Options menu under the View tab.
According to the Windows Insider Program Team, the feature is currently being evaluated within the Dev and Beta channels. Microsoft encourages users to submit performance-related feedback through the Feedback Hub, especially if they encounter unexpected behavior.
Part of a Larger Effort to Boost App Speed
This update follows the May 2025 launch of Startup Boost, an optional feature that accelerates Office app loading by prelaunching them in a paused background state. Like Startup Boost, File Explorer preloading aims to reduce waiting times while maintaining efficient memory use. Apps remain paused until opened or are removed from memory automatically when necessary.
Refinements to the Context Menu
Microsoft is also reorganizing File Explorer’s context menu to simplify functionality while keeping less frequent actions within easy reach. Several commands — including Compress to ZIP file, Copy as Path, Set as Desktop Background, and rotation options — have been moved to a new Manage file submenu.
Cloud storage actions such as Always Keep on This Device and Free Up Space now appear within their associated provider menus, grouped alongside the Send to My Phone option. Meanwhile, the Open Folder Location command has been placed next to Open and Open with to improve logical layout. Microsoft noted that the “Manage file” label may be revised as testing continues.
Availability
These updates are rolling out to Windows Insiders running Windows 11 version 25H2 with preview build 26220.7271 (KB5070307). Feedback collected during this phase will guide adjustments before broader release.
Conclusion
With background preloading and redesigned context menus, Microsoft continues refining File Explorer to deliver faster performance and a more intuitive user experience. The current preview offers a glimpse of potential improvements coming in future Windows 11 updates.
