Romantic travel often becomes the setting for unforgettable moments, from alpine retreats to iconic natural landmarks. To identify which places inspire the strongest reactions among couples, luxury safari operator Go2Africa analyzed more than 1.5 million travel reviews written by couples. The findings highlight destinations that consistently receive top ratings for romance based on real traveler experiences.
How the Study Was Conducted
Go2Africa reviewed over 200 global tourism destinations and landmarks, focusing on reviews authored by couples. Only locations with at least 100 couple reviews were included. The study measured the percentage of couples awarding each destination four or five stars, offering a data driven view of where romance resonates most strongly.
The World’s Most Romantic Destination
The top spot went to the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland. An impressive 98.66 percent of couples rated the destination four or five stars, making it the highest ranked romantic location in the study.
Zermatt is known for its car free environment, cozy chalets, luxury hotels, and panoramic alpine scenery. Couples can enjoy horse drawn carriage rides, scenic train journeys, and sweeping views of 38 surrounding peaks and 14 glaciers spanning Switzerland, Italy, and France.
Romantic Experiences in Zermatt
Among Zermatt’s highlights is a trip to the Klein Matterhorn, reached via the Matterhorn Glacier Ride cable car. Visitors can explore the world’s highest glacial palace, featuring ice tunnels, sculptures, and frozen attractions. Beyond winter, the region offers hiking, biking, luxury shopping, and Michelin starred dining, making it appealing year round.
Other Top Romantic Destinations
The study’s second most romantic destination was the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. It was followed by Sydney Harbour in Australia, Les 7 Cascades in Mauritius, and the Great Wall of China.
Rounding out the top ten were Iguazu Falls in Brazil, the Grand Canyon in the United States, Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the United Arab Emirates.
