New pricing takes effect for future tickets

Delta Air Lines announced it will increase checked baggage fees by $10 for tickets purchased beginning Wednesday, becoming the third major U.S. carrier to adjust pricing as jet fuel costs surge.

Under the revised structure, passengers will pay $45 to check a first bag on domestic and short-haul international routes and $55 for a second bag. A third checked bag will cost $200. The company said the adjustments are part of an ongoing review of pricing across its operations and reflect shifting global and industry conditions.

    Industry-wide adjustments

The move follows similar increases by United Airlines and JetBlue Airways last week. Historically, when one major carrier raises ancillary fees, competitors often follow suit.

Airlines are facing sharply higher fuel costs this year. According to Airlines for America, citing Argus data, jet fuel prices in major U.S. cities reached $4.69 per gallon on Monday. That represents an increase of nearly 88% since Feb. 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran.

    Geopolitical tensions drive costs

The prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments, has disrupted crude and refined fuel flows for weeks. The bottleneck has tightened supply and pushed energy prices higher worldwide.

Fuel remains the second-largest expense for airlines after labor, and the recent spike has put pressure on profit margins. While strong travel demand has helped offset some of the cost increases, analysts question whether carriers can fully pass through the surge to customers without affecting ticket sales.

    Earnings spotlight ahead

Delta is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings before markets open Wednesday. Investors are expected to focus on how effectively the airline is managing fuel volatility and whether pricing adjustments, including baggage fees, are sufficient to protect margins.

With energy markets still unsettled and geopolitical risks lingering, further fare or fee changes across the industry remain a possibility in the months ahead.
