One Battle After Another dominates with nine nods
Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest project, One Battle After Another, is entering Hollywood’s award season as a clear frontrunner after securing nine Golden Globe nominations. The film, centered on the kidnapping of a former revolutionary’s daughter, earned a spot in the best musical or comedy category. DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio Del Toro and young breakout Chase Infiniti all received acting nominations, underscoring the film’s broad appeal across categories.
Close behind is the multilingual family drama Sentimental Value, which collected eight nominations. The acting fields also feature contenders such as Dwayne Johnson, Timothee Chalamet and Wicked: For Good stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Despite its commercial success, the Wicked sequel was not included in the best film lineup.
Award season momentum builds ahead of the Oscars
Winners will be revealed on January 11 in Los Angeles, a key milestone before the Academy Awards in March. The list of nominees includes a mix of Hollywood veterans and international filmmakers. Works such as Hamnet, Sinners and Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein earned prominent recognition, affirming a strong slate of diverse storytelling this year.
Irish actors Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley are among the celebrated performers for their roles in Hamnet. Meanwhile, Chalamet scored a nomination for his portrayal of athlete Marty Mauser in the sports biopic Marty Supreme. George Clooney earned his 14th nomination for Jay Kelly, a drama about an ageing performer confronting his past, while Adam Sandler is recognized in the supporting category for the same film.
International cinema shines
This season features a particularly strong showing for international films. Iran’s Jafar Panahi received four nominations for It Was Just An Accident, which follows a man seeking retribution against a former intelligence officer. Other foreign-language contenders include The Secret Agent and No Other Choice, both earning multiple nominations.
In the music categories, standout contenders include “Dream as One” from Avatar: Fire and Ash and the pop hit “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. The latter title also appears in the best box office hit and best animation categories. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood adds to the excitement with a nomination for best score for One Battle After Another.
