April swing across key Democratic states
As questions mount about her political future, Kamala Harris is beginning to map out her next moves. The former vice president will headline a series of Democratic Party events across four Southern states in April, according to a person familiar with her plans.
During the week of April 13, Harris is scheduled to attend fundraisers for the Democratic parties in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. She will then deliver the keynote address at the Arkansas Democrats’ annual Fisher Shackelford Dinner in Little Rock on April 25. Invitations to many of these gatherings are expected to go out soon.
Her appearances follow a recent speech at the National Women’s Law Center annual gala in Washington and precede another public address planned for later in the month.
Echoes of a past primary strategy
The choice of Southern stops has drawn attention among Democratic operatives. During her 2020 presidential bid, Harris’ campaign team referred to a similar approach as its “SEC strategy,” aiming to compete strongly in states with large Black primary electorates to offset potential weaknesses elsewhere. That campaign ended before the first primary contest, but the geographic parallels are notable.
Though Harris has not announced any decision regarding a 2028 presidential run, interest in her plans is growing. Other potential Democratic contenders have begun making inquiries about her schedule and intentions.
Book tour and midterm engagement
Harris is also nearing the end of a six-month national tour promoting her memoir, published last September. The tour has placed her before largely supportive audiences across the country. After opting not to run for California governor, she indicated a desire to step back from public office while supporting Democratic efforts in the midterm cycle.
She has recorded advertisements for the Democratic National Committee and for a Virginia ballot initiative set for April 21. In recent primaries, she endorsed Rep. Jasmine Crockett in Texas and has been in contact with the eventual nominee, James Talarico. She has also connected with Juliana Stratton in Illinois and Scott Colom in Mississippi following their primary victories.
Maintaining party influence
Beyond federal races, Harris has weighed in on mayoral contests, backing Helena Moreno in New Orleans and Zohran Mamdani in New York, as well as former aide Dan Koh in a Massachusetts congressional primary.
Appearing at a February fundraiser in Cleveland for Rep. Emilia Sykes, Harris was asked what she had been doing lately. Her response was brief: “Listening.”
