Home Favorite Eyes Third Title
Carlos Alcaraz returns to familiar clay this week at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, aiming to respond quickly after his runner-up finish at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters. The 22-year-old relinquished the top spot in the PIF ATP Rankings to Jannik Sinner following that defeat.
Back at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, Alcaraz owns an impressive 14-2 record at the ATP 500 event and lifted the trophy in 2022 and 2023. He opens his campaign against qualifier Otto Virtanen.
If Alcaraz advances, he will face either Sebastian Baez or Tomas Machac in the second round. A projected quarter-final clash against fifth seed Andrey Rublev looms, while third seed Alex de Minaur could await in the semi-finals. Alcaraz memorably saved two match points to defeat De Minaur in the 2022 semi-finals on his way to his first Barcelona crown.
Young Talent and Veteran Presence
In the bottom half, second seed Lorenzo Musetti faces 20-year-old Spanish prospect Martin Landaluce in a compelling first-round matchup. Landaluce recently reached the quarter-finals at the Miami Open.
Another rising Spaniard, 19-year-old Rafael Jodar, enters the draw after capturing his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech. He begins against compatriot Jaume Munar.
Other seeds in Musetti’s half include Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie and Arthur Fils. Norrie faces wild card Stan Wawrinka, who is competing in his final season on the ATP Tour.
Zverev Headlines Munich Field
Meanwhile, attention also turns to the BMW Open by Bitpanda in Munich, where Alexander Zverev seeks a record fourth title. The World No. 3 and defending champion opens against Miomir Kecmanovic, who defeated him earlier this season in Acapulco.
Fifth seed Francisco Cerundolo is a potential quarter-final opponent for Zverev and holds a 3-0 clay record against the German. A possible semi-final could feature fourth seed Flavio Cobolli or eighth seed Luciano Darderi.
In the bottom half, Ben Shelton begins against fellow American Emilio Nava, with a potential quarter-final clash against rising Brazilian Joao Fonseca. Third seed Alexander Bublik shares a section that includes former World No. 3s Stefanos Tsitsipas and Marin Cilic.
With major clay events approaching, Barcelona and Munich offer key opportunities for contenders to sharpen their form ahead of the heart of the European clay-court season.
