Nothing Unveils Ear 3 with Super Mic Case

Nothing has announced its new Ear 3 earbuds, which introduce a unique feature: microphones built into the charging case. The system, called “Super Mic,” aims to enhance call clarity and voice recordings, setting the Ear 3 apart in a crowded wireless earbuds market.

    Super Mic Technology

The Ear 3 case includes two microphones activated by a dedicated “Talk” button. Users can employ them for calls, voice notes, and memos through the Essential Space on Nothing phones. While the earbuds must be connected and out of the case, the company claims clearer audio than the buds’ microphones alone. Early impressions suggest only modest improvements, but performance may vary across use cases.

    Design and Build

Continuing Nothing’s semi-transparent aesthetic, the Ear 3 comes in black or white with reinforced metal elements for greater durability and antenna performance. The design showcases internal components, staying true to the brand’s signature style. The case also supports wireless charging.

    Sound and Features

The earbuds feature 12mm drivers with spatial audio, LDAC Hi-Res support, and a personalized EQ based on a hearing test. Battery life reaches five and a half hours with active noise cancellation enabled, and up to 22 hours with the case. While respectable, these figures are not industry-leading. Super Mic support is limited, as many apps default to the phone’s microphone, though compatibility with select third-party video apps is confirmed.

    Availability and Pricing

The Nothing Ear 3 will retail for $179, with preorders opening immediately ahead of its full release on September 25. Despite questions around its naming convention, the device represents a new direction in earbud innovation, particularly in how it integrates case functionality.

By embedding microphones into the charging case, Nothing is experimenting with how earbuds can extend beyond traditional design. While limitations remain, especially in app compatibility, the Ear 3 could appeal to users seeking style, solid sound, and an inventive approach to call clarity.
