    A Shift After Wintour’s Era

For the first time in 37 years, American Vogue has a new leader. Anna Wintour, who turned the magazine into a global fashion authority, has handed the editorial reins to Chloe Malle, 39. Malle now holds the title of “head of editorial content” rather than editor-in-chief, reflecting how much the media landscape has shifted from monthly print dominance to digital-first strategy. Wintour, however, is not stepping away. She remains chief content officer at Condé Nast and Malle’s direct supervisor, continuing to oversee Vogue’s 28 global editions.

    Malle’s Editorial Vision

Malle, previously editor of Vogue’s website and co-host of its podcast, has made clear she does not intend to be “Anna lite.” Instead, her goal is to put her own stamp on the magazine. She plans to scale back the print edition’s frequency, releasing themed, collectible-style issues on high-quality paper. Online, she aims to focus less on quick-hit trending content and more on witty, original, and irreverent points of view that appeal to a more curated audience.

    Background and Style

Daughter of actress Candice Bergen and filmmaker Louis Malle, Chloe Malle acknowledges her privileged background but says it has motivated her to prove herself as more than a “nepo baby.” She studied literature at Brown University, wrote for the New York Observer, and contributed widely before joining Vogue. Known for her approachable personality, she resists the stereotype of fashion elitism, once dancing mid-show at Tommy Hilfiger’s urging. Her office decor, featuring Lego Disney villains built by her young son, mirrors that down-to-earth image.

    Challenges Ahead

Malle inherits Vogue at a time when fashion media is under pressure to reinvent itself. Legacy publications face declining print sales, rising digital competition, and the challenge of integrating AI into storytelling. Vogue still holds immense cultural sway, but Malle must balance its glamorous legacy with modern demands for digital engagement, events, and new revenue streams. Her first print issue under this vision is expected in 2026, signaling what could be the start of a new era for the iconic brand.
