Paramount Confirms Sequel at CinemaCon
Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun 3, Paramount Pictures announced during its CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also returning for the third installment.
The project was first reported to be in development in 2024, with writer Ehren Kruger attached. Kruger previously co-wrote Top Gun: Maverick alongside Eric Warren Singer and Christopher McQuarrie.
Following a $1.5 Billion Hit
The announcement follows the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, directed by Joseph Kosinski and released in 2022. The film grossed approximately $1.5 billion worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget.
The sequel arrived at a pivotal moment for the theatrical industry, as many cinemas were still recovering from pandemic-related closures. Its performance was widely credited with helping reinvigorate box office momentum.
Continuing Maverick’s Story
Maverick marked Cruise’s return to the role 36 years after the original 1986 film. In the sequel, Maverick returns to the elite flight school to train a new generation of pilots for a high-risk mission. Among them is Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, played by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late friend “Goose.”
The film featured a new ensemble of pilots portrayed by Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, Danny Ramirez, Jay Ellis, Greg Tarzan Davis and Manny Jacinto. Supporting cast members included Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris and Charles Parnell.
Top Gun: Maverick also marked the final film appearance of Val Kilmer, who reprised his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky before his death in 2025.
Additional plot details and a release date for Top Gun 3 have not yet been disclosed.
