Nostalgia takes center stage on Disney+
Two decades after Hannah Montana first premiered, fans are gearing up for a milestone moment. The “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special,” debuting on Disney+, brings Miley Cyrus back to the role that defined a generation from 2006 to 2011. Filmed before a live studio audience, the hourlong event features a conversation between Cyrus and Call Her Daddy host Alex Cooper, appearances by Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, and a brand-new Hannah Montana song alongside a country-pop rendition of “The Best of Both Worlds.”
The excitement is already spilling across social media. According to a TikTok representative, posts tagged #HannahMontana in the United States have risen nearly 400% in the past month, while #HannahMontanaAnniversary has surged 120 times. Glitter, wigs, sequins and skinny scarves are making a comeback as fans prepare to celebrate.
Classrooms and living rooms join the party
For many, the special is more than just a TV event. Hannah Rodriguez, a second-grade teacher, is hosting a watch party for her students. A longtime fan, she has been weaving Hannah Montana into her classroom routine through what she calls a “Montana Minute.” When students complete their assignments, they get to listen to a song from the show as a reward.
Rodriguez described the classroom ritual as a shared memory in the making, adding that the series has been part of her life since early childhood. Bringing that enthusiasm into her role as a teacher feels, she said, like a full-circle moment.
In Los Angeles, content creator Mackenzie Dudzik is throwing her own glitter-filled gathering. Her living room is decorated in gold and purple, complete with a rhinestone microphone. Dudzik explained that the watch party is about celebrating a formative chapter of her youth and acknowledging the growth that has followed.
“It’s not just about revisiting a show we loved,” Dudzik said. “It’s about honoring our younger selves and recognizing how far we’ve come since then.”
Healing through fandom
Hana Settles, a content creator based in Arkansas, is crafting party favors for her guests, including themed buttons and friendship bracelets featuring phrases such as “I Got Nerve,” “Sweet Niblets” and “Nobody’s Perfect.” For Settles, embracing her fandom openly as an adult feels empowering.
She described the celebration as a way to reconnect with her younger self, recalling how passionately she loved the show during middle school. Hosting a watch party now, she said, feels both joyful and restorative.
A celebration rooted in fans
The anniversary special blends nostalgia with new moments, offering longtime viewers a chance to revisit iconic sets and songs while introducing fresh material. For Cyrus, the event centers on the audience that supported the show from the beginning.
As the premiere approaches, the surge in online tributes and themed gatherings suggests that Hannah Montana’s legacy remains strong. Twenty years later, the best of both worlds still resonates.
